Milestone: David Gackstetter Successfully Defends His PhD Thesis

Advancing spatial generalization in satellite image time series classification

David Gackstetter PhD defense celebration

We are delighted to announce the successful doctoral defense of David Gackstetter, jointly supervised by Prof. Marco Körner (TUM Chair of Remote Sensing Technology) and Prof. Kang Yu (TUM Precision Agriculture Lab). David has completed his dissertation titled:

“Spatial Generalization in Satellite Image Time Series Classification through Transfer Learning and Data Harmonization.”

David’s research addresses one of the central challenges in large-scale agricultural land use monitoring and remote sensing: ensuring that machine learning models trained on satellite image time series remain robust, transferable, and spatially generalizable across diverse landscapes. His work advances the scientific understanding of transfer learning, domain adaptation, and harmonized multi-sensor satellite data, contributing valuable methodological innovations to the remote sensing and digital agriculture community.

🌟 Thanks

Special thanks also go to Prof. Marco Körner, whose co-supervision and expertise in remote sensing and computer science significantly contributed to shaping David’s scientific journey. We extend our sincere appreciation to Prof. Markus List for chairing the defense. We gratefully acknowledge the HEF for financial support of his PhD project, enabling David’s innovative research on satellite-based machine learning for agricultural and environmental applications.

🌟 Congratulations, Dr. David Gackstetter!

David’s successful defense marks a outstanding scientific achievement and an exciting milestone in his career.

We congratulate him warmly and look forward to seeing the impact of his contributions as he moves into the next phase of his professional journey.

A warm thanks to the our team members for their creativity and enthusiasm in preparing David’s doctoral hat — a cherished tradition that made the celebration joyful and memorable.

This achievement exemplifies the excellence in research and collaborative spirit that defines our Precision Agriculture Lab at TUM Family.
